Charter schools or academies are different from established state schools.

Parents are encouraged to join different committees as well as elect board members to serve in the best interest of their students. By working directly with parents, TPCA encourages classical education with heavy parental involvement.

Charter schools/academies receive government funding but operate independently of the established state school system, and students can elect to attend regardless of zip code, or being in its district. In Colorado, charter schools operate via a contract with an authorized user, such as the school district or the Colorado Charter School Institute. Oftentimes they can be confused with private schools however charter schools/academies are tuition-free and open to all students.

Per the Colorado department of Education, during the 2019-2020 school year there were 260 schools that identified as charter schools. Charter Schools/Academies can be preferential since parents have to apply if they choose to enroll their children into a charter school/academy. Once enrolled students also have access to a more flexible curriculum than what a public or state school has to offer. These curriculums can be a bit more individualized and innovative which can assist in allowing students the opportunity to flourish. Twin Peaks Charter Academy seized on this opportunity and elected to offer a classical education, which is something that no other school in the area offers. This has allowed TPCA to offer a curriculum that is rigorous and content-rich!

A frequently asked question is whether a charter school/academy is accredited or a ‘real school’. Conversely, parents also want to know who is holding these schools accountable for their actions. The State Board of Education accredits all public school districts. When a school meets the district’s accreditation standards the school district will in turn accredit those schools. Charter schools/academies are still a part of the local district and are held to the same standards as any other public school in the district. Charter schools/academies are accountable to the school distinct, the Charter School Institute, the state and the families in the school. They are also required to participate in the state-mandated assessment programs to make sure all students are measuring on track with their peers. Twin Peaks Charter Academy in Longmont, CO is an accredited charter school that offers classical education to its students. Parents and students are able to apply to TPCA as a school of choice, regardless of a parent’s primary zip code.
