Under the new rule, supervising practitioners must use real-time, two-way audio and video technology to satisfy the CMS’ “immediate availability” requirements for level 2 diagnostic imaging, which includes contrast-enhanced procedures. Audio-only communication does not meet CMS standards, and supervising clinicians must remain immediately available remotely during the entire exam. This policy applies across outpatient medical centers, physician offices, and IDTFs, improving flexibility while still maintaining stringent patient standards through modern telecommunications infrastructure.
ContrastConnect and other experts note that these changes will benefit outpatient Medicare facilities greatly, enabling increased patient access to advanced diagnostic imaging studies, especially those where contrast media is administered.
