NEMO Industries Announces Plans to Develop $3 Billion NEMO Ironworks I, Phase One of the World’s Most Efficient Pig Iron Facility, in Ascension Parish, Louisiana

  • The company hopes to invest an additional $5 billion across two additional phases, for a total capital investment of $8 billion over 15 years.
  • The company is expected to create 350 permanent jobs in Phase One with an additional 600 jobs across Phases Two and Three, creating 950 total permanent jobs.
  • The facility will include a direct reduced iron plant and electric smelting furnace to produce 2.3 million metric tons per annum of efficiently produced pig iron. NEMO Industries intends to utilize the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence ironmaking technology to increase efficiency, uptime, and safety.
  • Pending permit approvals and final investment decision, Phase One construction is slated to commence in late 2027 and expected to span three years.
  • NEMO Industries is backed by partners Cargill, Lowercarbon Capital, BoxGroup, 776, and co-founding investor Vivek Ramaswamy.

NEMO Industries, the AI-powered ironmaking platform, announced its plans to develop a $3 billion project on the West Bank of the Mississippi River in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, to build Ironworks I, Phase One of the world’s most efficient pig iron plant, which will supply 2.3 million metric tons per annum of granulated pig iron to domestic and global partners.

Phase One will create 350 direct jobs, with an additional 1,500 at peak construction. Phases Two and Three are expected to add an additional 600 full time jobs, with an estimated additional 2,250 indirect jobs in the surrounding community. The development of Phase I is advancing toward a positive final investment decision in 2027, contingent upon several factors, including the completion of required commercial agreements, receipt of necessary permits, and securing project financing. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with plant commissioning in 2030.

“NEMO Industries is thrilled to announce Ironworks I, Phase One of our facility in Donaldsonville, Louisiana,” said co-founder and CEO, Daniel Liss. “Here in the heart of Louisiana we’re proving that the future of iron will be forged by artificial intelligence, made in America, and built to keep our steel supply chain strong for generations to come.”

“Louisiana offers a rare combination you can’t find in many places: world-class deepwater port access for global logistics, low-cost, stable, and plentiful natural gas supply, local communities that understand and support industry including deeply skilled and experienced workforces, all of which create an ideal industrial business climate. It’s the perfect place to build a plant that’s globally competitive and built to last,” added co-founder and President, Michael DuBose.

Replacing traditional coal-based iron production methods, a direct reduction furnace and electric smelting furnace will utilize natural gas and electricity to reduce and smelt iron ore pellets into granulated pig iron. NEMO Industries will maximize efficiency by capturing CO2 for potential off-site sequestration. The facility will be designed with state-of-the-art dust, noise, and combustion controls to protect the local community. Groundbreaking self-learning plants will use artificial intelligence to increase efficiency, uptime, and safety. NEMO Industries is backed by partners Cargill, Lowercarbon Capital, BoxGroup, 776, and co-founding investor Vivek Ramaswamy.

“As European markets accelerate their decarbonization commitments, reliable, sustainable iron production from the U.S. will be essential to meeting demand with maximum carbon efficiency. Cargill is proud to support NEMO Industries’ new project in Louisiana, which will play a pivotal role in catalyzing more efficient steelmaking. This project is exactly the kind of forward-looking investment our industry needs,” said Lee Kirk, Managing Director, Cargill Metals.
