Grossmont Union High School District Digitally Transforms Educational Experience for 17,000 Students with HPE GreenLake

San Diego-area district enables teachers and administrators to deliver advanced digital educational experiences through a flexible, scalable private cloud at a predictable cost

Empowering its students to “build their best future” for over 100 years, Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) is expanding on its tradition of providing leading-edge learning environments by adopting the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud portfolio from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE). The HPE GreenLake portfolio and its hybrid cloud, intelligent edge and compute solutions enable connected classroom and campus experiences for students, along with the teaching, learning and administrative management systems necessary to deliver an advanced digital education experience.

Despite public education budgets remaining tight, data-intensive workloads for classroom and administrative technologies continue to grow, placing new demands on the underlying IT infrastructure and education technology teams. In response, districts like GUHSD are adopting simplified, scalable private clouds with predictable costs to meet the needs of students, teachers, administrators, and the communities that fund public education.

“Readying students to be successful, whether at college or in careers, requires supporting our teachers and administrators with innovative technologies that drive creativity and connection in the classroom,” said Rick Roberts, executive director of educational technology services, GUHSD. “Our HPE GreenLake deployment ensures we have the modern technology infrastructure we need for meeting new demands, while also keeping budgets and headcount manageable.”

Located in the eastern San Diego County, the 17,000-student district maintains 15 college-like campuses and employs approximately 3,000 teachers and staff. As an early 1:1 computing district, GUHSD has seen rapid growth in the utilization of the district’s on-premises applications, such as business intelligence, finance, cybersecurity tools, building and identity management and telecommunications, making private cloud an attractive choice.

With the HPE GreenLake platform, GUHSD can host its critical applications like PowerSchool Business Plus and Tableau in a secure private cloud managed by HPE. “This frees up our lean IT staff to support advances in physical and cyber security, as well as the expanding landscape of digital technologies our educators rely on for delivering high-quality student experiences,” Roberts said.

“Like so many districts, GUHSD is expected to provide students with access to modern technologies, as well as the skills and experiences they’ll need for success throughout their lifetimes,” said Alexia Clements, vice president worldwide Hybrid Cloud Solution Sales, HPE. “We’re proud of our 20-year relationship with GUHSD that has assisted generations of students with gaining the proficiencies for future success. With HPE GreenLake, we’re providing a private cloud to transform the entire educational experience while ensuring the district continues to be good stewards of taxpayer funds.”

Working with trusted technology partner Nth Generation, GUHSD chose the flexibility of the HPE GreenLake platform to power its two data centers with a combination of HPE Managed Services for full infrastructure management, support and optimization, as well as on-demand self-management capabilities. The HPE GreenLake deployment includes HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Business Edition for a self-service private cloud to simplify VM and infrastructure management; HPE Alletra Storage and HPE ProLiant servers; existing intelligent edge wired, wireless, and network security and management solutions from HPE Aruba Networking.

Secure, high-performance cloud infrastructure at a predictable cost

According to Constellation Research, a single-tenant private cloud like HPE GreenLake is, on average, 50% less expensive, 65% more performant, and twice as fast for development cycles than public cloud1. This provides districts like GUHSD with high-performance, cost-effective, and secure cloud infrastructure while moving from sizable capital expenditures to a predictable operating expense model.

“With HPE GreenLake at the heart of our technology infrastructure, we’ve eliminated the conventional process of asking voters to approve large IT expenditures when our systems are already obsolete,” said Roberts. “Instead, we gain an advanced, continuously updated private cloud solution, that is flexible and scalable, at a predictable cost.”
