A Decisive Shift in the Tutoring Industry

By: Get News
The education industry has always been very traditional. With the rise of the internet and the tech-savvy Gen Z’s, this notion is about to be seriously challenged.

Since the first students of antiquity, teaching has always been about filling seats in a classroom and listening to a teacher delivering a passive lecture. Students are expected to take notes, ask questions, and at the end to be given homework. Homework was considered to be repetitive, long and frankly boring.

This led to the rise of the tutoring centre in the mid-1980’s, where students were funneled to locations afterschool and expected to complete hundreds of repetitive questions. The goal was to ‘drill concepts’ into the students’ consciousness. This approach is somewhat reminiscent of Tayloristic principles in factory worker management. It has slowly gone out of favour as industry heads realise the potential negative effects of this approach on student engagement and passion.

The pandemic has forced change in the way teaching is consumed. Generation Z’s, ever adaptable, have transitioned to online learning. Students are now able to access the best teachers regardless of their location. Issues such as travel cost and time are now irrelevant. Teaching times are more flexible as students do not have to worry about library closing times or being out when it is still dark. This model, now tried and tested, is here for good.

Group tutoring has been losing popularity in favour of one-on-one tutoring, which promises significantly higher student engagement and interactivity.

Teachify is leading the charge in the post-pandemic world. Along with other organisations such as Arc Tutoring, the virtual learning model is here to stay. Teachify (teachify.com.au) is in the process of implementing a complete digital transformation to streamline and increase student interactivity. Lowering the barriers of entry for both students and tutors.

Looking into the future, macro issues such as the rise of VR and AR are set to progress the industry even further. With students living inside of truly immersive experiences within the metaverse.

With the pandemic in its waning days, a different form of tutoring has entered the mainstream. This trend is likely to continue.
