The book, Kaleidoscope of the East: The China You Should Know, contains detailed news and knowledge on China and presents information about the country in an uncensored manner. For all it is worth, Kaleidoscope of the East: The China You Should Know is a book on China by Chinese Commoners for non-academic Western audiences. It is a product of two years of voluntary work by Chinese lay personas who are residents of the United States and China.
Written without governmental oversight, external funding, or lobbying, Kaleidoscope of the East: The China You Should Know intends to educate and inform the average American about China. It is not an exposition for experts looking for in-depth opinions.
Speaking ahead of the book’s launch, Dr. Yuanting Zhang explained, “While both China and the U.S. are seen as powerhouses in their respective corners of the world, they are total opposites in terms of culture, language, customs, governmental agency, religion, and technology. Books regarding China’s warring past, aggressive government, or materials specializing in specific knowledge (e.g., doing business in China) are plentiful. Still, very few books focus on the people, the culture, the food, and the society.”
Dr. Yuanting Zhang and the other authors of this book are avid sports enthusiasts. They believe athletes are the best ambassadors for foreign affairs and that the 2022 Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing is a great opportunity to be part of a great conversation. This expansive collaboration introduces Western audiences to all aspects of China in an undaunting manner, aspects usually forgotten by media seeking sensationalized stories or controversies.
