CDOD Shows Support for Local Businesses amid State Health Order

Businesses Fight Back to Continue Operating

CARLSBAD, NM, July 17, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In an effort to show support for local businesses negatively impacted by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham's COVID-19 health orders, the Carlsbad Department of Development (CDOD) took action Wednesday. The CDOD passed a resolution against the July 13, 2020 public health order issued by the governor that prohibits dining in at restaurants. The health order also prohibits out of state visitors to state parks in New Mexico, and requires travelers to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival to the Land of Enchantment.

"Every business is vitally important to the Carlsbad Department of Development," stated CDOD Board President Craig Stephens. "As such, we have passed this resolution in support of these businesses which have been shut down, many for the second time in six weeks."

New Mexico had previously been shut down for a period of time until about mid-June. A slow re-opening of non-essential businesses, including many locally owned restaurants, had occurred before the governor issued the new health order. The previous shut down has now been reinstated.

"Some of these businesses will not survive a second shutdown, therefore time is of the essence," Stephens added. "We urge everyone to support our local businesses as much as possible."

Many local consumers in Carlsbad are in complete support of these businesses being able to stay open. This week, efforts in Carlsbad and across the state were launched via text and online to show solidarity.

"Of any industry in the state, the restaurant industry has displayed the most willingness to adapt to whatever safety precautions are required of them," Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway pointed out. "They've more than earned the right to stay open by any possible standard, and we support all efforts to get our restaurants back open."
