1 in 10 Brits have NEVER used their household tools, leaving an estimated two billion pounds worth of tools gathering dust

West Lothian, Jun 25, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - Extra time around the home is leading the majority of the country to tackle DIY projects, according to a recent study by national construction supplier Burton Roofing

After analysing YOY search trends via SEO Monitor, the study shows more than a 300% increase in searches for DIY products during the social lockdown, but how many of the country are following through with these intended home improvements?

Through a survey of 2,000 UK residents, the study indicates that 34% of Brits have been splashing out on new purchases for their toolboxes during the lockdown. Of the new purchases, it seems the country is looking for bigger and more ambitious DIY projects whilst in lockdown, with Power Saws (23%), Power Drills (18%) and Power Washers (12%) topping the list of new purchases.

The average value of the items in our toolboxes stands at £371.30 across all tool types, indicating an estimated collective national spend of £19 billion (£19,669,954,640) on spanners, hammers and drills and other tools according to the latest adult population figures from the Office of National Statistics.

However, buying a set of shiny new tools and actually putting them to regular use are two very different things. The research indicates that over a third of Brits (37%) only using their tools for household DIY tasks every few months at the most, whilst 1 in 10 have never used their tools despite investing the money to purchase them. Based on the national tool spend calculations, this suggests that almost two billion pounds worth of tools (£1,966,995,464) are being left untouched in houses, sheds and garages up and down the country.

There are however a large number of people utilising their time to actually put their new tools to work, with the data indicating that 62% of respondents claim to be doing more DIY than usual since the end of March.

Bristol has the most enthusiastic lockdown DIYers, with 80% of residents using the time at home to attempt some extra home improvements, with Belfast (73%) and Leeds (68%) not far behind. Those in Southampton are the least likely to be doing more DIY in lockdown, however, a third of residents (33%) are still tackling a new DIY project.

Paul Hattee, Managing Director at Burton Roofing, commented on the findings:

"Whilst it is heartening to see so many people trying their hands at DIY during the national lockdown, it is important to keep in mind the importance of properly planning out a project, however big or small when tackling any home improvements

"With the study highlighting an increase in the country's DIY activity as well as further spending on power tools, planning your project is key to ensure the results of any ambitious DIY efforts match your intended outcome.

"To avoid having to redo any of your DIY efforts at additional cost, ensure you have properly thought through your chosen household alterations and used the correct protective equipment to ensure no unnecessary hospital visits."
