Governor Larry Hogan enacted a stay-at-home order for the State of Maryland on March 30, 2020, and it will remain in effect until it is explicitly extended or rescinded.

"Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the government has determined that it's necessary to control the direct movement of people as well as to control the use and occupancy of buildings. What's important for the public to understand is that violation of this order is a misdemeanor criminal offense that is punishable by up to a year in jail and/or a fine of up to $5,000," said MD criminal attorney at Scrofano Law, Morgan E. Leigh.

One exception to the stay-at-home order is allowing travel to and from Essential Businesses. All stores that sell food, such as groceries and convenience stores, have been deemed essential. For those residents in more rural areas of our state, the Governor has included stores that sell livestock and farming supplies as essential.

"There are several exceptions to the stay-at-home or shelter-in-place order, one of which is non-essential business conducting minimal operations. It is also an essential activity to care for a family member, pet, or livestock in another location. However, while the order does permit exercising outside while maintaining social distancing requirements, it does not permit leisure activities such as picnicking and reading books in the park. The order also makes it a criminal offense to have gatherings of more than 10 people. It doesn't matter whether it's public or private property," Leigh added.
