STUDENT CREATIVITY IS NURTURED WITH ART GRANT AWARDED TO OTAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Otay Elementary School Principal, Monica Castillo

Otay Elementary School in the Chula Vista Elementary School District is excited to be the recipient of a school grant that funds creativity in arts and science. Monica Castillo, principal at Otay Elementary School, was selected along with 20 other elementary and middle school principals by Crayola and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) to receive the Champion Creatively Alive Children school grant.

The grants will be used to fund innovative programs that will foster creativity in students. The Champion Creatively Alive Children grant provides Otay $2,500 in funding, plus $1,000 in Crayola supplies for the school to work towards creative goals. Principal Castillo said, “This award will support our efforts to integrate the arts fully into our curriculum and into the lives of our deserving students.”

With this grant and other funds, the school will enlist artists to teach and train, along with the District’s Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator, to provide Otay teachers with professional development and coaching on multiple strategies and unit plans to integrate science and art into learning. The modules that teachers will be trained to integrate into regular curriculum are based on the Next Generation Science Standards and national arts standards.

Grants like these are important for schools and children, as Crayola believes that students can reach their full potential in education when their creativity is ignited and critical thinking skills are nurtured. Otay Elementary School intends to deepen students’ understanding of their learning through unique opportunities and resources that will foster creative experiences.
