In his 2019 State of the Union address, US President Donald Trump has announced a plan set to eliminate HIV transmission in the US by 2030. This has been so far viewed as a highlight of his State of the Union address.
"In recent years, we have made remarkable progress in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Scientific breakthroughs have brought a once-distant dream within reach. My budget will ask Democrats and Republicans to make the needed commitment to eliminate the HIV epidemic in the United States within 10 years. Together, we will defeat Aids in America and beyond,” Trump told the nation.
There are over 1 million people living with HIV in the United States with 40,000 new transmissions recorded every year. According to the president, the plan is aimed at reducing HIV transmission by 75% in the next 5 years and by 90% in the next 10 years. This is supposed to prevent over 250,000 new infections within this period. The plan includes the following measure: Diagnosing all people with HIV as early as possible, Rapidly treating the infection for sustained viral suppression, Protect people at risk of infection, Rapidly responding to growing HIV clusters.
This plan has been received well though there are skeptics when it comes to the feasibility of the plan due to logistics and resources. The assistant secretary for health at the HHS, Dr. Brett Giroir said that there will be sufficient funds for the HIV/AIDS plan announced by President Trump.
“We are not able to provide specific budget numbers at this time. ... But we are highly confident that the resources being provided in 2020 are sufficient to support this very aggressive program. In my mind, the program has already started. We have been working together for months putting this together. I've already addressed the American Public Health Association and received tremendous support and collaboration already this morning. So while the proposal will roll out increased resources in 2020, all of our individual agencies are already working on this," Giroir said.
