Anza Parent University Encourages Learning at Home and Parent Involvement for Elementary School Attending Families

For parents at Anza Elementary School in the Cajon Valley Union School District, helping their students with assignments and homework has never been easier. Anza Parent University is the after school program for parents that is connecting them to their children’s school life. In Parent University, parents learn reading skills that they can use with their students at home and also learn things that are connected to what the teachers are instructing in the classroom.

The first year of Parent University graduates are now giving back to the school, says Anza Principal, Maria Kehoe. The graduates come to read in the classrooms to the children, demonstrating their hard work in their own learning. Principal Kehoe says she is so proud of the parents and the “risks that they take, the courage that they demonstrate, and the love that they share with our children.”

Parent University graduate, Jay Prema says “it’s not just about me showing up to my son’s school, but also me giving back to the school shows my son he can also be invested in this school.” Other parents say they love Parent University because they feel apart of a community, more connected to their student’s learning, and encourage them to do their best. Parent Liaison, Doaa Polus, says that the goals of Parent University are for parents to enhance their reading skills and practice the skills learned in Parent University sessions and apply them by reading in the classroom.

With so many cultures and languages of students and families at Anza, Parent University gives parents the skills they need to work with their own children in English and has brought the school community together as a much tighter group. Teachers, staff, parents, and the community are coming together helping everyone together to make a difference in the lives of all the students at Anza Elementary School.
