The Miyamoto family members flew in from all over the country to celebrate future Dr. Courtney Miyamoto's graduation.
For most people, a graduation ceremony can be a long and boring event, despite the excitement that comes with completing a course of study. This was not the case for Courtney Miyamoto, who holds two distinctions in her area of study. She was one of the many graduates whose commencement was on 18th May 2018 at the University of Maryland, School of Dentistry (UMSOD), but she stood out from the crowd in many ways. Her stunning video that showcased the life and times at the university became a highlight of the graduation.
With her graduation, Courtney Miyamoto became the third member of her family to join the UMSOD alumni. Both her late grandfather, Dr. Alan Miyamoto, and father, Dr. Michael Miyamoto, studied at the university, graduating in the year 1962 and 1987 respectively. The smile on her father’s face was enough to prove how proud he was of his daughter’s achievement. In fact, their attendance at the graduation emphasized her family’s closeness, as five other members traveled from different states to celebrate with her, including Hawaii, Washington, and Pennsylvania.

Miyamoto’s video was not just your typical graduation video. She had a specific message she wanted to pass to her fellow graduates, who had succeeded in their studies from the multidisciplinary university. She wanted them to look back on their journey and reflect on their achievements so far, making a deliberate effort to count their blessings as they took the next step in life.
She made the four minute video more appealing by adding a tagline at the end in the Hawaiian language- E mahalo kakou I ka mea loa’a – which means ‘Let us be thankful for what we have’. In their applause, the attendees were asked to consider the reasons why they ought to be grateful - a value that has been lost in the modern world of striving to get more and more. “My objective was to help people to have a reflective moment or two and see that there’s a lot to appreciate around them. I wrote the tagline in Hawaiian since the Hawaiian culture is a part of me and I wanted to share it with the world,” Miyamoto said.
Miyamoto’s ingenuity was acknowledged by her own faculty members and classmates. She was given an award earlier that week, singling her out as an outstanding student. She received the Nathan David Gold Memorial Award from the UMSOD for her heartfelt diligence and commitment to clinical practice. The associate dean at the student affairs office, Karen Faraone, DDS, MA, highlighted how this award is one of the most respected in the school. “Courtney is a favorite to many in her class and beyond,” Faraone said.
Miyamoto made the complete video in 2016 as a way of recording her life during her second year of study. Her intention was to share her experiences with her late grandfather, Alan Miyamoto, and her friends. Although he did not get to see it, it was used by Andrea Morgan, DDS as part of orientation for incoming students to the UMSOD. Faraone later asked Miyamoto to submit an edited version of her video for the commencement.
While she was inspired by her sister Lindsey, a social media guru to create the video, Miyamoto dedicated it to her late grandfather, who was not only a dentist, but one who continued to practice even when he hit age 80. “I know he is with me in spirit, even though he’s not here to celebrate with the rest of my family,” Miyamoto said. Her high regard for family makes her video production all the more special.
Courtney will be going back to Hawaii to work together with her father, Michael Miyamoto, in Wailuku. She intends to begin her career in general dentistry, which includes dealing with fillings, bridges, single crowns and tooth extractions. She also hopes to provide oral care to the needy in Hawaii. She thus hopes to not only enhance her father’s practice, but bring the mission of UMB by providing services for the public’s good and enhance human life.
