Bold goal set by international food bank organization: Certify 10 food banks in 10 countries to mark 10-year anniversary
CHICAGO - Oct. 19, 2015 - PRLog -- The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN), an international non-governmental organization that creates and supports food banks around the world, announced a bold “10 in 10” initiative that will significantly strengthen the network’s ability to reduce world hunger and food waste. Marking GFN’s 10-year anniversary, the organization plans to certify 10 food banks in 10 countries in its anniversary year. This certification signals compliance with GFN’s international standards that ensure the food bank is a safe and accountable system for receiving, storing and distributing food for the benefit of hungry people.

There is enough food to feed the world, but one third of it is lost or wasted and never feeds a hungry person. Food banks rescue perfectly edible, nutritious, yet non-saleable surplus food that would otherwise be wasted and distribute it to hungry people through social service organizations.

“Ten years is an exciting milestone, and that calls for a bold move that will further advance our cause,” said Christopher Rebstock, GFN co-founder and interim president and CEO. “Achieving our ‘10 in 10’ goal will significantly strengthen food banking activities around the world and help the GFN network feed even more hungry people.”

10 in 10 Goal Signifies Strength of Global Food Banking

Certifying 10 food banks in GFN’s 10th year is a 50 percent increase over the number of certifications since the organization was founded. The certification process is rigorous, and each food bank requires different levels and types of support to achieve certification.

“The fact that we have so many food banks in the pipeline working to achieve international certification demonstrates dedication and momentum. It’s a testament to the many people around the world who believe in the value of food banking,” said Rebstock.

Certification Means More Food, Less Waste

GFN certification is valuable to food banks, global supporters, and ultimately beneficiaries who receive food aid. "Being part of GFN is a fantastic asset, especially when developing partnerships with multinational companies. Membership is like a seal of approval and reassures donors of our credibility,” said Gabrielle Kirstein, executive director, Feeding Hong Kong.

“When we decide to provide charitable support in a new market, we first seek out food banks with GFN certification because it saves our company time and money,” said Brian Nash, director, sustainability, Ingredion Incorporated. “The GFN certification assures us that the due diligence has been handled for us … so we can get right to work helping the food bank provide for hungry people."
