By: PRLog
PR Log - Aug 17, 2011 - (RALEIGH, N.C.) – North Carolina libraries aim to educate and entertain parents, students, teachers, history buffs, and PBS fans of all ages with an array of new online educational videos now available in streaming format for free with a library card. North Carolina libraries purchased the new video content from PBS, including the complete 14-part award-winning Civil Rights Era history documentary series, Eyes on the Prize.

The new videos also include the popular Ken Burns’ series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, and Masterpiece Theater titles including Wuthering Heights, Turn of the Screw, Wind in the Willows, Anna Karenina, and many more. Patrons can watch these videos online at http://media.nclive.org, or via local library websites.

In addition to the nearly 100 new PBS videos added, libraries are also making available a collection of local oral history documentaries produced in Wilkes County, NC. Previously only available to watch on DVD in the library at Wilkes Community College, these high-quality documentaries about the people of Wilkes County are now available to watch in your home or classroom, anytime. The videos were created by the Save Our Wilkes County History Committee to document, explore, and preserve the county’s past.

Library Senior Manager at Wake County Public Libraries, Dale Cousins, hopes North Carolinians will take the opportunity to explore the free online videos provided by North Carolina libraries.  "Streaming video services like those from Netflix and Amazon.com are becoming increasingly popular, but the cost of these commercial services is also on the rise. By making the new online videos available through libraries, patrons will have the opportunity to watch interesting and entertaining programs for free at home, or anywhere with an Internet connection. The NC LIVE Video Collection includes videos for all ages interested in history, literature, and science."

Chief Academic Officer for the North Carolina Virtual Public School, Tracy S. Weeks, Ph.D., hopes that students will also gain new perspectives with these videos.  “The NC LIVE Video Collection will provide students and teachers across North Carolina with a tremendous collection of resources specific to our state. The NC Virtual Public School is thrilled to have access to these high quality videos to include into our high school online courses.”

NC LIVE, a consortium of nearly 200 libraries across North Carolina received a Library Services and Technology Act grant to purchase the videos from the State Library of North Carolina and the Department of Cultural Resources. A partnership between NC LIVE and the Department of Public Instruction extends the reach of the online video collection to all k-12 public schools, where teachers and students can stream the videos in classrooms across North Carolina.
