Produce Company in California Recalls Parsley Due to Potential E. coli Contamination

By: WebWire

Last month, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about a company's voluntary recall of a limited number of cases of curly leaf parsley. The recall was initiated after a routine regulatory sample tested positive for non-O157 STEC (Shiga toxin-producing E. coli).

The product was distributed to retail stores, wholesalers, and distributors in Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Missouri. Fortunately, at the time of the recall posting, no illnesses had been reported. Consumers who have any of the parsley are advised to not consume it.

According to the recall notice: Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli is an organism that can cause foodborne illness in a person who eats a food item contaminated with it. Symptoms of infection may include stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. The illness primarily impacts elderly individuals, children, and people with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill.

“The scientists at LA Testing offer laboratory testing services to identify Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and many other pathogens to assist farmers, producers, and manufacturers in mitigating microbial and chemical exposure risks,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing. “LA Testing also provides a wide range of tests for pesticides, herbicides, mycotoxins, and other potential contaminants. These services are available for raw materials, finished products, and production surfaces.”
