Annual Operation Santa Program Highlighted by Colorado Springs Shipping Store

Colorado Springs, CO. — This holiday season, a prominent shipping center in Colorado Springs is encouraging their community to spread some cheer by participating in the annual Operation Santa program. The Operation Santa program is a tradition that dates back over 100 years and is hosted by the United States Postal Service.

Youngsters have been writing letters to Santa Claus for generations. So, what happens to the letters once they are mailed? According to the USPS website, Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock "set up Santa’s first mailroom in 1912 authorizing local postmasters to open these letters for employees to read and respond." However, as the years passed by and the influx of letters grew larger than they could handle, the program was eventually opened to the general public so that corporations, charities, and regular citizens alike could participate.

"Operation Santa" is a program that still exists today, and it's easy for children to participate. All they must do is write a letter expressing what they want from Santa for Christmas, then their parents put the child's name and full return address on the envelope. Parents then put a First-Class Mail Forever stamp on the letter and mail it (it must be postmarked December 12th or before) to Santa's workshop address: 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888. Please note that not every letter sent to Santa will be "adopted," so take care when mailing letters to follow instructions and do so in a timely manner.

Once received, the letters are sorted and scanned, and the personal information is redacted before being posted to the USPS Operation Santa website. From there, the letter can be "adopted" by individuals or businesses. Adopters then purchase gifts for the child and ship them by December 19th via a participating USPS location. Finally, the gifts arrive at the child's home labeled from Santa and are ready to be placed under the tree for Christmas.

For those who wish to be a part of Operation Santa and adopt a letter and send a present by December 19, adoption letter sign-ups begin on November 28th. Visit uspsoperationsanta.com to get started.
