Pushing the Limits of Power Elite RF’s New Era of C-Band and S-Band Amplifiers

-- Elite RF has been around long enough to know that in defense and radar programs, “high power” is not just a spec on a datasheet. It is something engineers and operators have to live with every day. Systems have to start up when they are told to, hold performance over long duty cycles, and survive real-world conditions that are far messier than any lab setup. That reality is shaping the way the company approaches its newest generation of RF amplifiers.

Founded in 2014 by former Motorola engineers, Elite RF designs and builds solid-state RF amplifiers and microwave systems from its facility in Hanover Park, Illinois. Design, assembly, and testing all happen in-house. For customers working on complex platforms, that matters. It shortens feedback loops, makes customization easier, and reduces the usual friction between design teams and manufacturing.

The company’s recent work in C-band and S-band has put it in the middle of several defense and radar programs. These mid-band frequencies are increasingly important for modern radar and sensing applications, and they demand more than just raw output power. Elite RF’s team has developed a 17 kW S-band system operating between 2.7 and 3.1 GHz, along with C-band RF amplifiers delivering 5 kW today, with higher-power variants in progress across the 5.4 to 5.9 GHz range. These are built as complete, field-ready systems, with redundancy at the module level and protection against high VSWR, over-current events, and thermal stress. Air-cooled and water-cooled configurations give integrators some flexibility when space, airflow, or environmental conditions are tight.

In defense programs, power amplifiers in defense sector applications are rarely judged on peak numbers alone. Stability, serviceability, and predictable behavior over time matter just as much. That is one reason Elite RF has leaned into GaN-based RF amplifiers and microwave amplifiers. Solid-state designs bring higher efficiency and longer operating life than older tube-based approaches, which helps when systems are expected to run continuously or in hard-to-access locations. It is also why Elite RF has become a supplier to major U.S. defense contractors working on radar, counter-drone, and communications systems.

The C-band and S-band platforms sit within a broader product line that covers RF amplifiers from 1 MHz up to 40 GHz, with output levels reaching 100 kW. The same engineering approach shows up in the company’s microwave generators as well. Its 2.45 GHz, 6 kW microwave system, one of its most widely deployed products, is used in industrial and research environments that demand long, uninterrupted operating cycles. That experience with long-life systems feeds directly into how Elite RF designs equipment for defense and radar customers.

What tends to stand out in discussions with Elite RF engineers is how practical their thinking is. The focus is not just on hitting performance targets, but on making systems that can be integrated, maintained, and trusted over time. That mindset, backed by ISO 9001:2015 quality processes and ongoing upgrades toward aerospace and medical standards, has shaped the company’s push into higher-power C-band and S-band platforms.

As radar and defense systems continue to demand more power in tighter footprints, Elite RF’s latest RF amplifiers point to where this part of the industry is heading. Not just more watts, but more usable power that holds up outside the lab.
