Empathy in Medicine Initiative launches a Student Chapter Program, equipping high school and college students with toolkits to run empathy-focused healthcare communication initiatives.
-- The Empathy in Medicine Initiative (EMI), a student-led nonprofit advancing empathy and communication in healthcare, is thrilled to announce the launch of its Student Chapter Program, designed to help high school and college students start chapters that deliver structured, empathy-centered initiatives in their schools and communities.
Founded by Kevin Lin, a student at Great Neck South High School in Great Neck, New York, EMI focuses on strengthening patient-provider communication through practical tools, training, and community-facing resources that promote patient-centered care.
At its core, the new Student Chapter Program enables students to establish EMI chapters or clubs that run initiatives such as communication skills workshops, empathy-focused events and activities, and community education or service projects tied to patient-centered communication. Chapters are supported with practical toolkits and templates intended to make programs straightforward to launch and sustain, including meeting and event guides, communication scripts, and training materials.
“Too many students want to do meaningful healthcare-related service and leadership, but they do not have a clear structure to start,” says Kevin Lin, founder of the Empathy in Medicine Initiative and a student at Great Neck South High School in Great Neck, New York. “Our chapter program gives high school and college students a practical toolkit to launch empathy-focused clubs and projects that create measurable impact in their schools and communities.”
According to Lin, EMI is launching the program to meet growing interest in healthcare leadership experiences that emphasize ethical service and real-world communication skills. Through chapter activities, students can build experience in empathetic dialogue, active listening, and community education, skills that support stronger patient experience and more effective care teams. EMI’s chapter resources are structured to help students move from interest to action with clear guidance, templates, and training materials.
Early engagement indicates meaningful student demand. EMI reports 233 users on its platform and 73 chapter applications to date, with 69 currently pending or under review. This traction reflects a need for organized pathways that help students translate interest in healthcare into leadership, service, and measurable community outcomes.
