The Sixth Sun: Disabled Artist Abigail Roscoe Reimagines Aztec Mythology as a Defiant Response to hopelessness

By: Get News

At a time when global narratives are dominated by climate anxiety, burnout, and a pervasive sense of inevitability, Mexican-Canadian artist Abigail Roscoe offers a radically different vision. Her transmedia project, The Sixth Sun, is not a story about the end of the world: it is a challenge to the belief that collapse is unavoidable.

Drawing from Aztec cosmology, where previous worlds, or “Suns”, as they’re known in their mythology, have risen and fallen in cycles of destruction, The Sixth Sun asks a question rarely explored in apocalyptic storytelling: what if this cycle can be broken?

Set in modern Mexico City, the story follows Temo, a musician navigating identity, survival, and creative expression, whose life is upended by a supernatural encounter that reveals a hidden world of awakening gods and mythological forces.

As ancient deities like Huehuecóyotl return, the fate of the current era—the Fifth Sun—hangs in the balance. Yet the narrative resists spectacle-driven destruction, instead centering human connection, creativity, and choice as forces capable of reshaping the future.

The urgency of this story is inseparable from the circumstances of its creation.

Roscoe developed The Sixth Sun while navigating profound personal upheaval, including chronic illness and the loss of vision in her left eye due to glaucoma. (Coyote Studio) Rather than stepping away from her practice, she continued to write, illustrate, and build the project—adapting her process while deepening its thematic core.

“I live with one eye, but I see more clearly than I ever have,” Roscoe writes, reflecting on how loss reshaped her perspective and creative direction. (Coyote Studio)

This lived experience is embedded into the foundation of The Sixth Sun. The project emerges directly from a confrontation with grief-both personal and ecological-and transforms it into a narrative of resistance. It rejects passive despair in favor of active creation, positioning art not as escapism, but as a means of reclaiming agency in an uncertain world.

Roscoe’s work also stands as a deliberate counterpoint to the rise of automation in creative industries. Every aspect of The Sixth Sun- from its writing and illustration to its music and audio production-is created by human artists, voice actors, and collaborators, emphasizing connection and authorship in an increasingly digitized landscape. Through Coyote Studio, the creative hub she founded, Roscoe brings together interdisciplinary storytelling that centers disabled, queer, and Indigenous perspectives. The Sixth Sun expands beyond a single medium, incorporating visual art, narrative fiction, music, and immersive worldbuilding into a unified creative vision.

At its core, the project is a direct response to what Roscoe identifies as a growing cultural fixation on dread- the idea that ecological and societal collapse are foregone conclusions. Instead, The Sixth Sun insists on a different narrative: that the future is not predetermined, and that transformation remains possible.

As Roscoe describes it, the project began as a way of asking: what do we do when the world feels like it’s ending? (Coyote Studio)

Her answer is not resignation—but creation.
