International Dance League Announces Inaugural Season, Establishing Dance as a Global Professional Sport

The season will kick off in NYC in May, and will feature six global teams

International Dance League (IDL) today announced the launch of its first official competitive season, marking a major milestone in the league’s mission to establish dance as a professional, global sport. This follows the league’s formal debut, and a successful $7 million seed funding round led by Elysian Park Ventures in November of last year. IDL launches at a pivotal moment for dance. While it’s one of the most participated sports in the United States, ranking second only to basketball with more than 26.2 million participants, dance has never had a true global professional league structure. Given that the format has never been more globally consumed, socially amplified, or culturally influential, IDL emerges as an inflection point for the sport.

IDL’s first season will feature six of the most influential and accomplished professional dance teams in the world, competing across six scheduled regular season events in New York (USA), Vancouver (Canada), Sydney (Australia), Seoul (South Korea), and two in Los Angeles (USA).

IDL’s first season will feature six of the most influential and accomplished professional dance teams in the world, competing across six scheduled regular season events in New York (USA), Vancouver (Canada), Sydney (Australia), Seoul (South Korea), and two in Los Angeles (USA). Each event will have standardized judging and a championship title modeled after traditional professional sports leagues, with a season champion crowned at the end. Fans can expect high-level athletic performances, cultural expression, and live entertainment, catering to both in-person audiences and global digital viewership. Designed as a scalable global league, IDL is building the foundation for long-term international growth across teams, cities, and audiences.

“This league was created for dancers, by dancers,” said Connor Lim, Co-Founder and CEO of International Dance League. “IDL represents a new beginning for the sport, creating an opportunity for the best dancers in the world to be rewarded and recognized for their lifelong dedication. We’re excited to empower the next generation of dancers globally and establish a new international standard for professional dance.”

IDL was created to directly address the lack of sustainable professional career pathways for dancers, providing a solution to one of the industry’s biggest challenges today. While traditional systems move dancers from the front of the stage to the background, as supporting dancers, choreographers, or teachers, IDL flips that narrative by offering long-term, paid opportunities and a league structured to keep dancers front and center of the sport.

The six founding professional teams represent major global dance hubs including Brotherhood (Vancouver, Canada), Quick Style (Oslo, Norway), Jam Republic (Singapore), GRV (Los Angeles, USA), Royal Family (Auckland, New Zealand) and 1MILLION (Seoul, South Korea). Together, these teams bring decades of competitive excellence, global fanbases, and cultural influence into a single league for the very first time. Collectively, the teams and talent networks have over 20 billion views, 22 championships and 250 million followers.

“When IDL reached out, saying yes was instinctive,” said Brett Goebel, owner of the Royal Family Dance Crew. “Parris and I have always believed dance is entering a new era, and this felt aligned with the vision we’ve built together from day one. We’re excited to help lead that movement. This league represents the future of sport, creativity, and culture, and we’re proud to play a role in defining what comes next.”

The league will also have an IDL Cultural & Historical Advisory Board to ensure that dance styles represented within IDL are spoken about, taught, and contextualized accurately and respectfully. The purpose of the board is to support the academic, historical, and cultural education side of IDL. People regularly misrepresent, rename, or misunderstand the roots of street dance culture and their origins, but IDL is setting a precedent to learn from the people who built these forms, not reinterpret them. Legendary board members who are masters in street and club styles include: Buddha Stretch, Sherwin "Beast" Salonga, Hekou Heru, Caleaf Sellers, Chrybaby Cozie and Mr. Wiggles. More to be announced in the coming months.

Beyond competition, IDL is designed as a long-term platform for professional dance growth. Teams are not restricted by dance style, allowing for creative diversity and cross-genre influence during competition. Each season will be supported by high-quality live production, original social/digital content, behind-the-scenes storytelling, and interactive fan experiences that extend beyond the stage. The league will also continue developing pathways through its community division, creating opportunities for grassroots and emerging teams to participate in IDL events and progress toward professional competition.
