With limited regulatory oversight and widespread inconsistencies, independent verification has become critical to restoring consumer trust in the supplement market
SuppCo, the health tech app that helps people make sense of supplements, today announced the launch of TESTED by SuppCo, an independent certification program that anonymously purchases and tests the off-the-shelf supplements to verify their active ingredients. The new program builds on SuppCo’s TrustScore quality rating system and earlier testing initiatives, which revealed that roughly half of top-selling supplements failed to meet basic label accuracy standards, underscoring the need for greater transparency and accountability in the industry.
Despite being a multibillion-dollar industry, the dietary supplement market remains largely unregulated, operating with limited pre-market oversight and leaving consumers to navigate inconsistent product quality and marketing claims that can be difficult to substantiate. TESTED by SuppCo addresses the gap by bringing data-driven verification to one of the most confusing categories in consumer health, empowering people to make more informed decisions about their supplement purchases.
TESTED by SuppCo will debut in partnership with some of the most respected supplement brands, including Momentous, Thorne, Metagenics, Gaia Herbs, Designs for Health, Fatty15, Solaray, Niagen, Integrative Therapeutics, and Pendulum.
“SuppCo was born out of my own frustration trying to make informed decisions about supplements, and I quickly realized this wasn’t a personal challenge, but a systemic failure of the industry,” said Steve Martocci, co-founder and CEO of SuppCo. “With TESTED by SuppCo, we’re setting a clear, independent standard for transparency and accountability so people can finally trust what they’re buying and responsible brands can prove it.”
All products are tested by an independent ISO 17025–accredited laboratory, and those that meet or exceed 95% of their labeled active ingredient claims will earn the TESTED by SuppCo certification. All results, regardless of product certification or failure, are posted on SuppCo’s product pages. SuppCo’s testing is repeated annually to ensure compliance, and products that do not meet the standard are guided through remediation before re-testing. Brands pay a certification fee to cover the cost of independent testing, program operations and licensing.
“It’s easy for brands to talk about quality and boast big claims about their products, but it’s much harder to prove it,” said Jeff Byers, CEO of Momentous. “We chose to participate in TESTED by SuppCo because trust and accountability are how this industry moves forward. Transparency should not be optional and the brands that stand behind their products, like we do, should be willing to step up to the plate and prove it.”
